Gloucestershire have landed England Under-18 starlet Jack Taylor on a development contract.

Already a member of the county's Academy programme, the talented 17-year-old batsman is regarded as a potential first-team player of the future.

Offered a two-year contract following a series of impressive performances in Gloucestershire's second XI last season, the Chipping Norton-born youngster now hopes to follow in the footsteps of namesake Chris Taylor, who made the step-up from schoolboy to first-class cricket 10 years ago.

"I'm ecstatic to be entering into the world of professional cricket," said Taylor, who hopes to turn out for Knowle in the West of England Premier League this summer.

"This is just the beginning of what I hope will be a long career for both Gloucestershire and England.

"I'd love to do what Chris Taylor has done. I admire him because he works hard, is a consistent performer and a world-class fielder."

Taylor has double cause to celebrate, having been named in the England Under-18 squad to tour Malaysia this month.

His call-up comes on the back of recent appearances for the England Development side against South Africa and the MCC.

Gloucestershire Academy director Owen Dawkins said, "I am delighted for Jack. He has worked very hard to get is foot in the door. He has huge potential and I am sure we will see very good things from this gifted young cricketer.

"Jack is one of a number of talented young players we have coming through the Academy here at Gloucestershire. It is an exciting time for him and for the club."

A top-order batsman and budding off spinner, Taylor will continue his progress in Gloucestershire's Academy system preparatory to working with the senior squad during the summer holidays.
