YOUNG parents and their children were especially welcome at an open day at Oldbury Court Children's Centre.

The centre is developing a group for parents aged under 25 who wish to meet other parents, and gain support, information and advice on everything from learning experiences for their children to training and employment. It is also setting up a group for dads and male carers which will be held at various sites in the Fishponds community to help men play an important part in their child's life.

Oldbury Court opened a year ago as a Sure Start Children's Centre, one of 25 in Bristol. It works in partnership with local NHS health visitors, Little Hayes Nursery School, Bristol City Council, and Barnardo's children's charity to support the best possible outcomes for children and families.

The centre offers childcare, which is available 48 weeks of the year through a private day care provider, early education and family support services for children aged up to 11 and their families.

These include drop-in sessions for local parents and carers in the community, baby massage, fun with food sessions, offering parents and children new experiences and food choices to promote healthy eating, and Peeps –the Peers Early Education Partnership – which supports the education of children aged up to three through song, rhyme, discussion and play.
