Youngsters from primary schools in south Bristol staged an art exhibition at Oasis Academy Bristol.

The work on show at the Art Gym in the secondary school in Hengrove was by members of the Oasis Juniors Club. This was launched in March to enable primary pupils to experience activities including: holiday clubs, fun days, after-school classes and gallery workshops.

The club encourages children to be creative and meet new friends, while helping to familiarise them with a secondary school environment.

The exhibition celebrates the work produced over the last year by pupils from Bridge Farm, Knowle Park, New Oak, Whitchurch and Perry Court schools.

Parents, staff and students who attended a preview evening enjoyed a dance performance by children from Knowle Park Juniors and Whitchurch Primary School and admired a range of 2D and 3D artwork, including William Morris stencils and Kenyan masks.

Charlie Coleman, a Year 5 pupil from Whitchurch Primary said: "I came to the after-school club at Oasis and made lots of really nice stuff which I've put in my bedroom"

Luke Dean, who is in Year 5 at Knowle Park Primary, said: "I really like doing all the art activities, especially making a mask to scare my sister. The best part is I made friends, and everyone at Oasis is friendly. At first I was worried about coming to big school but the Oasis Juniors club has helped me feel better about it."

Art Gym manager Rebecca Fitzgerald said: "Oasis Juniors has been a hugely enjoyable and successful programme which has strengthened links between the academy and its feeder primary schools and their families. Next year we'll be working with eight local primary schools and have an equally exciting programme. "
