Worries deepen for Weymouth boss Lewer after 10th successive defeat
Eastbourne Borough 3 Weymouth 0: Alan Lewer stopped short of writing off Weymouth's prospects of avoiding relegation following a 10th successive Blue Square Premier defeat.
But the Terras boss admitted he "can't see where a point is coming from" as his side lie just two points above the drop zone with six games left.
Lewer pulled no punches after a goal on the stroke of half-time by Matt Crabb and two late strikes by substitute Jack Jeffery made it 39 goals conceded and only two scored during the losing run.
He said: "The second and third goals came from poor mistakes by us and, when you're not mentally strong, that's what happens.
"This league is strong. You need quality, and unfortunately there is nothing in the locker for us. The fitness and organisation were not good enough."
In spite of the defeat, Lewer felt it was "the best we've played since we've been together".
Weymouth should have scored in the first half but Dominic Merella who failed to seize the opportunity when he got clean through, only to have his shot easily saved.
Matt Crabb broke the deadlock with a stooping header from a cross by Paul Armstrong, but several Terras players felt the ball had run out of play before it was whipped to the far post.
Nathan Crabb then forced goalkeeper Adam Legzdins to save with his legs and also wasted a clear-cut chance when in on goal as Eastbourne provided the greater threat after the break.
But Jeffery finished Weymouth off with two goals in the last eight minutes, the first coming just three minutes after he came on. He fired into the roof of the net from just inside the area following a header on by Danny Brown, and then rolled the ball into an empty net after a poor clearance by Legzdins.
