World champion trampolinist's club needs place to practice
World Champion trampolinist and 2012 Olympic hopeful Laura Gallagher is looking for a place her club can practice in Weston-super-Mare.
Laura, 19, is a member of the High Flyers Trampolining Club, which trains in Weston-super-Mare and Cheddar, and is working towards the London Olympics.
She has her sights on a gold medal, but needs her club, which has expanded rapidly since being established in 1991, to have a permanent base.
Another club member, Lauren Allen, 21, has also represented England.
The High Flyers club has members from Bristol and across Somerset.
But the club, coached by Sue Bramble, has to travel to leisure centres in the two towns to meet, which involves setting up and dismantling equipment after each training session.
The club is looking for a permanent building with a height of 9m and area of more than 6000sqft where equipment can be installed.
Laura, from Westonzoyland, says having a proper fixed base would help the clubs 60-team members and its 200 recreational members progress further.
"We have been looking for a new base for a few years and the one warehouse we found that was suitable fell through," she said.
"The trouble is what we need is quite specific in terms of the height of the building and the space needed.
"At the moment training is difficult because we have to set up the equipment at the start and the end of our sessions, which takes 15 minutes each time.
"This is time we could spend training if the equipment stayed up all the time."
Laura trains at the Kings of Wessex Leisure Centre, Cheddar, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and Hutton Moor Leisure Centre in Weston on Tuesdays and Fridays.
"Ideally we would like a new permanent base in Weston to use whenever we wanted rather than being restricted to limited sessions at leisure centres," she said.
"I don't think people realise how successful the club actually is and if we had a new base we could become even better."
The club has national, European and world champions as members and national technical coach Jack Kelly, from the World Class Programme British National Squad, is fully supportive of the High Flyers' aims.
"British Gymnastics believes a permanent trampoline facility would be well managed, be a great benefit to the community and help to develop our future world class trampoline gymnasts, bringing great credit to the South West and to Weston in particular," he said.
"The requirements of the 2012 Olympic programme operated by British Gymnastics are extremely demanding, as would be expected for any athlete aspiring to world class performance.
"Unfortunately public leisure centres cannot cater for this level of training."
