"There's already a huge following in Bristol and we hope the event can inspire many, many more. We want to make sure the sport keeps growing and give more children the chance to play."

Sport and health development manager at Bristol City Council Jonathan Amphlett said: "It's a great opportunity for kids.

"The whole festival effect of the event will enthuse the children and families watching professional rugby.

"We are working with professional clubs to make sure the legacy of the cup really lasts, leaving children the opportunities to get involved in the sport all through school."

Ruben Wilmshurst, 12, from Bristol Cathedral Choir School, said: "It's quite a big event for Bristol and it's the chance to show off what Bristol is like to the rest of the world."

The tournament will involve 14 nations, Australia, Cook Islands, England, Fiji, France, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Papa New Guinea, Samoa, Scotland, Tonga, USA and Wales.

The competition's structure will consist of two groups of four, with England drawn alongside arch rivals Australia, Fiji and Ireland in Group A.

Tickets for the World Cup matches are priced at £10, £15 and £20. Concessions will cost £5, £7.50 and £10.

Tickets are available at www.rlwc2013.com.

“If it was the UWE Stadium or Ashton Vale then no doubt it would be the plural but the state of the two existing stadia in Bristol aren't worthy of more than one appearance!”

So "a match" and not "matches".”
