Work begins to restore College Green protest site
THIS is how Bristol's College Green looks as work to restore it after months of being used as a protest camp gets into full swing.
The green is now completely fenced off to the public before turfing begins.
Work has already begun on digging out contaminated soil and outdoor vacuuming has taken place with specialist equipment to remove debris and scan for metal objects.
After the site was cleared officers at the council said the damage was so bad that extensive re-turfing would be needed at around £20,000.
However two horticultural contractors – Craig West Turf and Elmtree Garden Contractors made a goodwill offer to re-turf the whole site for £4,000 plus VAT, which are being supported by the council's in-house landscaping team.
Work is expected to be completed by the end of February. Fencing around the site will then need to remain for a further month to let the new turf settle.
It is expected that College Green will be open to the public at the beginning of April. Some areas will need to be dug out and removed entirely, particularly around the former camp's toilet, kitchen and bonfire areas.
Council leader Barbara Janke said: "Following the peaceful eviction of the protesters, it is now full steam ahead to return the Green back to its proper use as a public space all the city can use and enjoy."

“Looks like they're relaying the whole of College Green, not just the smaller area the occupiers occupied.”

What exactly will they be doing and at what cost.”
