A GRANDMOTHER who threatened her daughter's boyfriend with a potato knife in a bid to get her grandchild back has been handed a year's community order.

Kim Webber, 44, argued with Mark Griffiths, 27, outside his family's home in Nover's Hill, Knowle West, Bristol Crown Court heard.

Her daughter had taken the baby to the house, despite being told by social services that they were not to stay with Mr Griffiths after he had previously served time in prison for setting fire to a pregnant former girlfriend's house.

Webber, of Belstone Walk, Knowle West, went to the house to bring her daughter and grandchild home when an argument broke out.

She admitted a charge of possessing a blade.

Judge Mark Horton yesterday handed her the community order and told her to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work.

At an earlier hearing at Bristol Magistrates' Court May Li, prosecuting, said police had been called to the altercation.

She said: "Webber was seen holding a knife in her right hand and pointing it at Mr Griffiths' stomach.

"The rest of his family were in the front garden while Webber and Mr Griffiths argued on the footpath.

"When police arrived they took the knife from her.

"In interview she said she had argued with Mr Griffiths and gone back up the road to her house to get the knife after he threatened her.

"She said that when he saw her he came running out of the house with his top off and said 'you will never see your grandchild again' and 'I will blade you'.

"She said she pointed the knife towards his stomach as his brother had also come running out of the house before police turned up."

Debbie Clarke, defending, said: "This offence took place in the context of Webber's daughter having a relationship with Mark Griffiths.

"He is no stranger to these courts and in 2008 was given a long prison sentence at Bristol Crown Court after admitting arson with reckless intent.

"He had set fire to the house of his pregnant ex-girlfriend and her family while they were in the house – luckily they escaped."

Ms Clarke said her client was "very concerned" when her daughter started dating Mr Griffiths.

“What a charming bunch of people.

Forget the fabled Bristol tram! Funnel the money into building a 12' wall around Knowle West before the end of 2012. Property prices across the rest of Bristol would soar.”

“To be honest, I'm failing to see what she has done wrong. How else are you supposed to deal with people like that?”

“She's a SMASHing lady - when the chips were down she put her jacket on ('cause it was taters outside, and she'd rather be baking), kept her eyes peeled and hid the weapon that had become such a hot potato before fleeing to practice playing the tuber in a brass band.”
