Police close off Ashley Hill on the junction of Chesterfield Road, Bristol, after a woman was knocked down
Avon and Somerset police said the woman, aged in her 20s, was taken to Frenchay Hospital with a life-threatening head injury and she remained in intensive care there last night.
It is unclear whether she was walking on the pavement, the pedestrian crossing next to the junction in question, or crossing the road away from the crossing.

Police closed Ashley Hill from Lower Cheltenham Place to the mini-roundabout with Chesterfield Road, while they investigated what had happened.
Traffic from Ashley Down and Horfield was diverted down Chesterfield Road, causing tailbacks for much of the morning.
The road, which is a busy commuter route from north-east Bristol to the M32 and central Bristol, was then reopened at about 1.40pm.
Avon and Somerset police spokesman Martin Dunscombe said: "The pedestrian, aged in her 20s, suffered life-threatening injuries in the collision.
"A full investigation is under way to discover the circumstances of what happened.
"No one has been arrested in connection with this accident.
"We would appeal for any motorists, cyclists or passers-by on foot who may have seen what happened to get in contact with the police as soon as possible."
Witnesses are asked to call Avon and Somerset police on 101, with any information.
