A woman had to be cut free from a car which had crashed into railings outside Broadwalk shopping centre on Wells Road, Knowle.

The woman, in her 40s, suffered suspected spinal injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance on a spinal board.

Three other passengers, two middle-aged men and a middle-aged woman, were treated at the scene before being taken to the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

The crash happened at 11pm on Saturday. A volunteer first responder was first on scene, quickly followed by a specialist paramedic from the Great Western Air Ambulance.

Ambulance crews were dispatched from Bristol and Almondsbury ambulance stations.

Chris Hewett, a Great Western Ambulance Service paramedic who attended, said: "This incident was a typical illustration of the way that emergency services swing into action and work together to assist victims of road accidents.

"While the police made the scene safe by controlling the traffic, ambulance and fire crews worked in and around the wrecked car.

"Under the careful direction of our critical care paramedic, it took about 30 minutes to extricate the injured woman. It was a case of as fast as possible, but as slow as necessary."
