"I am also keen to speak to a man who came to the assistance of the victim after she sought refuge in his garden a few street away. He may have valuable information that could help us.

"I would appeal to anyone who knows anything about this incident, or the people who committed this crime to come forward and contact us in confidence."

Chief Inspector Bill Halsey said: "Incidents like this are extremely rare in the Hartcliffe area. However I would urge everyone to remain vigilant and think about your personal safety.

"If you are a resident in the area and are concerned we would urge you to come and talk to us."

Police say that shortly before the attack, the victim was walking in the direction of Hawkfield Road and had noticed a red car, similar to a Ford Fiesta, with a large exhaust, parked opposite the Fulford Arms pub. She was grabbed by the men as she walked past the car.
