A WOMAN who pilfered from elderly people's homes has been jailed for 30 months.

Mother-of-three Sophie Davies asked to use the loo and even claimed to be a door-to-door salesman as she distracted victims to steal from them, Bristol Crown Court heard.

Davies, 34, of Baker Street, Weston-super-Mare, pleaded guilty to two burglaries and asked for another theft to be taken into consideration.

Judge Michael Roach told her: "There is a nine-year gap in your offending, but you deserve a prison sentence. These were mean offences."

Davies was ordered to pay a victim surcharge payment of £120.

Richard Posner, prosecuting, said Davies committed the offences at the end of November into early December last year.

He told how she knocked at the door of 76-year-old John Turvey in Weston -super-Mare and asked to use the toilet and telephone.

In the process, she stole a wallet containing £70, the court heard.

Mr Posner said Davies also called at the home of a man aged 70 and stole a "small sum" of money.

He said she visited the home of Karen Lacey, claiming to be a kitchenware products saleswoman, and even negotiated a fake order before helping herself to a purse containing £9.

Mr Posner told the court: "Mrs Lacey said the defendant returned and wanted to use the toilet.

"She left the purse in the toilet but she did not return the £9 in the purse."

Sam Jones, defending, said his client had been "riddled" with addiction to class A drugs in her early years but had taken action to free herself of addiction. He said Davies had gone on to have three children, but lapsed into drink and Valium when her partner left and took the youngsters to Bristol with him.

He told the court his client had been remanded in custody over Christmas and had also missed one of her children's birthdays.

Mr Jones said: "She was left in Weston-super-Mare. She became depressed.

"A friend offered her drink and in a moment of madness she drank and took the drug.

"It affected her in a very significant way. In that context she entered the homes of those people and stole from them. She had immediate remorse and shame after committing those offences during that week."

Mr Jones said his client had not wanted to buy drugs, but she couldn't explain why she offended.

He said: "The probation report author said it was possibly a signal that she needed help."
