Witnesses saw man stabbed to death in Bristol
Several people told a jury they saw a drunk man stabbed to death on a Bishopsworth street.
Witnesses told Bristol Crown Court on Thursday that John Derrick was visibly worse for wear with drink when he was in a row with Bradley Payne in Gatehouse Avenue.
The jury was told Mr Derrick took a swing at Payne and offered to fight him "fist to fist" but Payne produced a knife from the back of his trousers and swiftly stabbed Mr Derrick in his chest and left eye.
Payne, aged 32, of Witchhazel Road, Hartcliffe, denies murder in July last year.
He also denies making a threat to kill and unlawfully wounding Aaron Bennington a month previously.
Natalie Adkins told the court that on the day in question she saw Mr Derrick in the street and he was drunk.
She told the court she saw Payne making inquiries as to where Mr Derrick was.
Lee Price also told the jury he saw Mr Derrick and he was drunk.
He told how Bradley Payne arrived in Gatehouse Avenue on a yellow BMX bike and an argument ensued between Payne and Mr Derrick.
He describes how, because he had children in a car, he ushered the men away and as Payne walked off he spotted two to three inches of knife handle sticking out of the back of Payne's trousers.
Mr Price told the court : "Johnny said 'I know you've got a knife, come on your little prick, stab me'"
Mr Price then said he remembered Johnny Derrick offering to fight Payne fist to fist.
At first, the jury heard, Payne had went to ride off on his bike but he stopped, dropped it on the ground and came back.
Mr Price said: "He dropped the bike and charged at him. He pulled the knife from behind, stabbed him in the stomach, made an arc motion and stabbed him in his eye."
Mr Price confirmed that before he was stabbed Mr Derrick swung a punch at Payne but missed due to his inebriated state and span round in a circle.
Natasha Monks told the jury Mr Derrick appeared to be drunk and she heard him say to Payne: "I know you've got a blade on you, so stab me you little prick."
Darren Morrison confirmed Mr Derrick had been drinking and was wobbling and offered to fight Payne without weapons before Payne stabbed him.
He said that after the attack a large number of people gathered to try and help and he (Morrison) was physically sick against a railing.
He said he noticed Payne going into a house in Innox Gardens and then a green jeep accelerating down the road.
The case continues at Bristol Crown Court.
