Winterbourne gymnasts celebrate success

Winterbourne-based Fromeside Gymnastics Club is celebrating after claiming a haul of six medals at the South West Apparatus Championships and a further six at a district gymnastics competition in Bath.

Five youngsters from the club took part in the South West event, held at Exeter.

Fifteen-year-old Andy Berndes led the way in the under-16 event, finishing second overall to take a silver medal with a score of 67.9. He also claimed individual gold on rings, silver on the pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar and bronze on the vault.

Two other Fromeside gymnasts enjoyed top-10 finishes in the under-10s competition. Nine-year-old Nicholas Thorne finished ninth with a score of 75.80, while eight-year-old Sebastian Murphy, competing two years above his age, was 10th with a score of 73.47. Nine-year-old Luke Elliott finished just outside the top 10, coming 11th with a score of 72.92, and 11-year-old Kai Greaves-Lugo finished 15th in the under-12 event, scoring 67.95.

Fromeside also claimed a six-medal haul at the district gymnastics competition in Bath. Finlay Cochrane claimed two gold medals in the under-7 event, taking the gold on trampette and the overall individual title. Club-mate Mackenzie Welsh took the floor gold and overall bronze, while Michael Cipolla finished just outside the overall medal positions in fifth.

In the under-11s, Dylan Rhodes and Danny Pirret competed extremely well, finishing joint second with a score of 35.80. Sam Smith-Ferrier finished 13th in his first competition.

In the under-9s, Jack Moore and Rory Van Onselen competed well, finishing in overall 12th and 14th position respectively.
