Campo Viejo Tempranillo 2010 is a new departure for one of Spain's biggest bodegas (wine estates).
Among the Rioja region's giants from its founding in 1963, Campo Viejo has long been known for reliable "commercial" wines widely available from supermarkets. Now Campo Viejo is redefining its basic wine as Tempranillo. It's the name of the constituent grape variety. Most red Rioja is a blend of Tempranillo with another classic Spanish grape, Garnacha, but this one is Tempranillo all the way.
I like this new wine. It is lipsmacking with bramble and redcurrant fruits and enticingly smooth from the oak contact, with grip and spiciness. A snip at Tesco's introductory price, which prevails right through September.
