Barbaresco is one of Italy's flagship wines. It's a red made from Nebbiolo grapes grown around the town of Barbaresco in the misty hills of Piedmont in the country's far north west.
Although it plays second fiddle to the neighbouring DOCG (defined wine zone) of Barolo, its wines are still dauntingly expensive. So, do look out for Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Barbaresco 2008, reduced from £9.99 to £7.00 until 19 February. It looks light of body but has a rich cherry aroma and a gripping, red-fruit savour that will bring to mind liquorice, coffee and at the finish the dryness of nuts in their skins.
It's a deeply satisfying, thoroughly Italian red, quite an experience.
