South West Centre trial champion Ricky Wiggins, from Stoford, near Yeovil, began the New Year in winning mode at the Otter Vale club's Ray Golesworthy Cup event in east Devon.

Wiggins was the best of a classy expert entry in the event, held over three laps of 13 sections at semi-frozen and muddy Wolversleigh Farm, at Sidbury. He gained the lead over Keelan Hancock on the first lap and increased it as the event progressed.

Ian Baker gained the second major success of the weekend by winning the Clubman class on a slightly less arduous route.

Lee Hassall won the Wilts Border Club's Kington Cup Trial at Stanton St Quinton, near Chippenham, the same day without dropping a mark in any of the sections that were lapped five times at Smith's Farm. Dean Hassall, Lee's father, made it a memorable family one-two by winning the Clubman Expert class.

Ian Baker was best Clubman Expert in the Taunton club's New Year's Day Trial at Upottery, near Honiton, in east Devon.

Over three laps of 10 sections at Aller Farm, he lost three marks on each of his first two laps, but the Wheddon Cross rider was unpenalised on his final lap.

Matt Pullman was top clubman with the loss of two marks in both the third and eighth sections.

Pensford's Gary Hudson beat regular award winners Peter King, Shane Lovatt and Paul Manning in the BSSA's timed and observation trial at Beaconsfield Farm, West Harptree, on New Year's Day.

He finished the hour-long event hot on the heels of Matt Ridgeway and Tom Smith, but his loss of only 20 marks on observation gave him the edge over his rivals.

Smith won the second part, which was reduced to 45 minutes because of the near freezing conditions.

The sidecar event received only meagre support. By completing five laps, Paul Manning and Roger Tuck had more than a lap to spare over their closest rivals.
