New South West Centre trial champion Ricky Wiggins scored a two-mark win over Gary Marshman in the Frome club's Ron Jefferies Cup Trial at Binegar, on the Mendips, on Sunday.

More than 70 riders contested the annual event in a quarry and adjacent woodland, but it was all down to a momentary lapse of concentration by Marshman which gave Wiggins, from Stoford, near Yeovil, the advantage. The former was alleged to have ridden over a marker in the third section and was given a controversial five-mark penalty for his mistake.

That, coupled with two two-mark debits on a climb over rocks and boulders in the eighth, and a single mark on a bank climb in the second, left Marshman with a 10-mark total, while Wiggins lost two marks in the first section and six more in the eighth.

Wiggins' father, Lee, took the over-40 class win with three single-mark losses in the eighth section, and Brian Shuttleworth gained a special test win over Martin Strang in the Over-50 class after they had finished all square on marking.

The consistent Shane Lovatt scored a three-mark win over Jason Hamblin in the Wells Club's President's Cup Timed and Observation Trial at nearby West Horrington. Chris Curtis was the first in a field of 21 to complete the hour-long event at Laurel Bank, but a 15-mark loss in the observed section cost him two places.

Bristol grass racer Rod Melksham, Swindon's John Jefferies and Matt Etherington shared the main races in the Swindon club's final meeting of the season at Dauntsey in Wiltshire the same day.

Melksham just beat Etherington to the finish in the National Licence Holders' final, but he could not match the pace of Etherington and Jefferies in the Open final.

Jefferies took the 350cc class win, which was decided over a number of point-scoring races after Etherington and Nathan Irwin had both been disqualified after riding outside the track boundary.
