Ricky Wiggins won the Yeo Vale club's January trial in Highgrove Quarry at Binegar on Sunday, finding no serious opposition in a field of 120 riders.

Yeovil rider Wiggins did not lose a mark in the first two laps of the four-lap, 10-section event, and it was not until the last section on his third visit that he lost a single mark on climbs over tree roots, mud and rocks.

The same section accounted for his only other mark on his final lap.

The battle for second place, between Ben Skinner and Ben Bramwell, went to the former via his better runs on the last two laps.

Father and son Hedley and Trevor Ashford, from Street, dominated the clubman and clubman expert classes, and Martin Strang gained a marginal win over Keith Ring in a close contest in the over-50 years of age class.

Radstock veteran Mike Fear led the British Bike Class at one stage, but he lost out in the latter stages to Swindon club man Martyn Wilmore.

Ty Kellett, who was badly injured in last October's Weston Beach Race, and his younger brother Tod, together with Finlay Cullum, scored class wins in the youth events.

So often a minor award winner, Paul Manning outshone his 56 other rivals in the BSSA's hour-long timed and observation trial at Compton Dando the same day.

He was not the first to complete the nine-lap contest at Fairy Hill, but he was the only one to lose fewer than 10 marks on the six observed sections, which became more difficult as frozen ground gave way to slightly warmer conditions.

Manning lost his six marks in the fourth section, where a stream crossing was approached through sharp bends and deep ruts.

Runner-up Shane Lovatt lost 15 marks in the same section, while Jason Hamblin and Matt McDonald, who finished third and fourth respectively, each lost a dozen marks there.

The first and third sections, which were woodland climbs, also proved difficult, even for the few competitors who completed all nine laps.
