Width is Bristol City's problem again, and now we face a grim winter

Now is the winter of our discontent.

Defeat against Burnley saw Bristol City's winless run extended to eight games and the away game against Watford at Vicarage Road on Boxing Day has turned into the proverbial six-pointer, with The Hornets sitting one place and two points beneath City.

Against Burnley, due to a number of injuries there was a recall to the starting line up for contract rebel Bradley Orr. Gary Johnson said he would use Orr if he needed to and he was true to his word.

Bradley was not match fit but gave a steady performance and did not let himself or his manager down. There was also a recall to the squad for the popular Scott Murray.

City showed plenty of huff and puff but again lacked that bit of quality in the final third and failed to work Brian Jensen in the Burnley goal anywhere near enough. Our first shot on target was the penalty scored by Nicky Maynard, and we just don't seem to get enough shots on goal.

I am starting to bore even myself by continually saying the same things. We need to get width in the side to stretch teams and also need quality in the middle of the pitch to provide for the front men.

I struggle to understand why this is not being addressed.

We had one real wide man in Michael McIndoe and yet again Macca kept coming inside and only on a couple of occasions did he get by his man and cross the ball into the box.

Gavin Williams played on the right-hand side and I feel that Johnson is doing Williams an injustice as this is clearly not a position he enjoys and makes him look nothing like the creative midfielder that we expected when he signed.

Again, with Williams playing right the pitch is narrowed and everything is congested down the middle.

I am surprised that Gary chooses to employ this tactic and honestly feel this is one of the biggest factors in our goals for statistic.

There really wasn't too much between the two sides and perhaps the only real difference was the wide play and quality of Burnley's ex-Manchester United player Chris Eagles.

Eagles put in a quality cross for their equaliser and then helped to set up their winner.

On the balance of play Bristol City did not deserve to lose but that is just how things are going for us at the moment.

The next win is very important and you can sense the apprehension in the stands and this must transmit itself onto the pitch.

The close-knit 'one for all and all for one' mentality that served us so well last year does not seem to be there this season and a couple of times on Saturday the frustrations of Gary and his No 2 Keith Millen was evident for all to see.

Depending on the injury situation I would expect there to be one or two changes for the Boxing Day game which also doesn't help, as Gary is unable to play a settled side.

There was an interesting news story this week concerning the Football Leagues overwhelming vote in favour of implementing new quotas on homegrown players from the start of next season.

At least four players in every 16-man match-day squad will have to have been registered domestically for at least three years before their 21st birthday. This should mean that younger players stand more of a chance of coming through the ranks.

I have been disappointed with the number of players coming through from the academy and am surprised that players such as Frankie Artus and Tristan Plummer have not made the breakthrough and featured in the first team.

I'd like to wish a Happy Christmas to all Bristol City fans all over the world and to the players, management and directors. I've asked Santa for three points against Watford. I'd also like to wish our friends in blue and white quarters across the city a Merry Christmas.

“I enjoyed reading your well set-out thoughts, not that I agree with every word. Jordan Walker is another who is worthy of serious consideration, especially as the right-back spot is a problem. Warnock at Palace uses youngsters to good effect. I wish City would do likewise with at least one or two.”
