Somerset wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter has set himself the target of scoring 800 to 1,000 Championship runs this season.

The youngster is expected to be promoted to number seven in the order, following the departure of Ian Blackwell, when Justin Langer's side start their LV County Championship Division One campaign against Warwickshire at Taunton tomorrow.

Having spent part of the winter Down Under with Langer, Kieswetter is hoping to build on last year when he made 524 Division One runs.

"I think I will move up to seven in the Championship with Tregs (Pete Trego) at six. It will give us both more responsibility and we are looking forward to the challenge," said Kieswetter. "We have definitely got the players to compete.

"I set targets, but it depends on where I am batting. At seven, 800 to 1,000 runs is a very good season."

Kieswetter ended last season as an opening batsman in the limited overs game, cracking a maiden century against Gloucestershire in the Pro40 League.

"In one-day cricket I want to keep as well as I can and score as many as I can," he said. "I could be batting anywhere in the top five in one-day cricket."

Kieswetter was one of just a few Somerset players to winter abroad.

"I have been busy. I was in Australia for nine weeks in Perth working with JL and all his mentors," he said.

"It was pretty intense – in the gym twice a day, a lot of batting coaching, two sports psychologists, some martial arts thrown in there and I learnt a lot about myself.

"It was a big learning experience and one I would highly recommend to any of the players down here."

Kieswetter, who qualifies to play for England next year, played some games for Langer's grade team Scarborough.

"The coaching worked, because I made a few runs, but obviously it is a different level here and the bar is raised once again," he said.

"We have just got to go into the season trying to keep it simple.

"There is no reason why we can't be successful again.

"We are going to try to win every competition, but we are putting a lot of emphasis on our one-day cricket because our four-day cricket is of a better level.

"The bar has been raised this season compared to last year. We are all excited and training hard and all looking forward to the season."
