A teenager who helped catch two burglars has been awarded a divisional commander's commendation by police in Dorset.

Chris Phillips gave police a running commentary after he saw two men casing his neighbour's house and even nipped outside to check the registration number of the car the burglars were using.

Chris was upstairs in his bedroom in Kitchner Road, Weymouth, on July 15 last year.

He saw the men checking out the house opposite, before breaking into the conservatory.

Chris then told his mother who phoned 999. Two men in their 30s were arrested at the scene.

Colin Jeffery of Upton admitted theft, burglary and possessing diazepam tablets and was given a community order but breached it and was given a 30-month prison sentence instead.

Chris said: "My neighbours are really nice and I didn't want anything bad to happen to them."
