Chris Westwood wants to join Cheltenham Town permanently.

The Peterborough United defender's two-month loan expires after next Tuesday's match at Swindon Town.

He is hoping his spell can be extended to a third month and is even eyeing a full-time move in the summer.

"I have enjoyed my time here, although on the pitch, results haven't been what I'd have wanted," Westwood said.

"We play good football and I wouldn't mind staying. People have asked me why I'd want to stay when we're bottom of the league, but I am enjoying playing and being part of what we are trying to achieve."

Westwood's first team opportunities at Peterborough have been limited this term.

He expected to be recalled by Posh when two of their defenders picked up injuries.

"I have another season on my contract at Peterborough so I don't know what will happen," he said.

"But them letting me go out on loan and then them having injuries and rather than recalling me they have brought other players in on loan, all suggests that I am not wanted there. I expected to be called back, but I was happy to stay here to be honest."

Westwood's short-term future is likely to depend on whether Peterborough are prepared to allow him to stay for very little or no payment towards his wages.

Boss Martin Allen described what Cheltenham have paid for him during his spell as "peanuts".

Westwood cited team spirit as the reason why he'd rather be fighting relegation for the Robins than return to Posh.

"I went down with Walsall (in 2006) and even though we were in it right to the very end of the season, there were people in the team who didn't want to be part of it and were hiding," he said.

"The thing that strikes me about Cheltenham is that the buzz around the lads is still unbelievable. We haven't been turned over by anyone since I have been here, but we cannot get that elusive win.

"Once we get one the belief that is already here will be even greater and as long as there are enough points still to play for, we will continue to believe we can stay up."
