Weston-super-Mare 1 Bognor 2: Jahson Downes, on loan from Reading, scored one goal and set up the other as Bognor beat a shell-shocked Weston to record their second away win of the season.

The home side dominated 90 per cent of the game but were denied by resolute defending – with teenage keeper Anthony Ender in outstanding form – and some controversial decisions by one of the referee's assistants, who infuriated the home crowd by denying Weston a goal and stopping several promising attacks.

Weston took control from the start with Manny Williams, Jack Compton and Marc McGregor all shooting wide.

But Bognor took the lead on 25 minutes, from their first attack of the game.

The diminutive Downes rose above the home defence to power Steven Brinksworth's cross past keeper Ryan Northmore.

McGregor again went close and Williams fired narrowly across goal as Weston played some of their best football this season.

Two minutes into the second half Darren Mullings had the ball in the Bognor net but was denied by a flag for offside. Later Weston had strong appeals for a penalty ignored when a handball was not spotted by referee Derek Eaton or his assistant.

McGregor was denied by a point-blank save from Ender, Adi Harris had an effort turned behind and when Weston were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the Bognor penalty area, Harris' kick beat the wall but the keeper flung himself to his right and one-handedly turned the shot round a post.

Four minutes from time Weston equalised when a corner was not properly cleared and substitute Marvin Brown fired low through a crowded area to find the far corner of the net. But deep into injury-time, Downes got possession and passed to Nathan Lynch, who beat Northmore from eight yards out.

Deep into injury-time, Downes got possession just inside the Weston half. He burst through the defence and, after being closed down, slipped a pass to Nathan Lynch who beat Northmore from eight yards out.
