Weston museum to host pier fire display
AN exhibition of items salvaged from the Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare after the fire is to open next week at the town's North Somerset Museum.
The display will include exclusive pier CCTV footage of the blaze on July 28, a block of fused and melted coins, a melted lampshade and a bin.
It is hoped a dodgem and go-kart could also be put on show at the museum in Burlington Street.
The exhibition is open from Monday.
Firefighters battled to stop the blaze on the 104-year-old seaside landmark but the pier's pavilion – itself rebuilt in 1933 after a previous fire – was destroyed as the temperature soared to 1,000C.
Owners Kerry and Michelle Michael have put together the display to help people remember the pier pavilion.
Michelle said: "There will be a loop of fire footage that people have not seen before, including CCTV footage from within the pavilion.
"There will also be items that have been salvaged from the wreckage and as we continue to salvage, anything interesting found will be added to the display.
"T4 On The Beach organisers have also been in contact as several interviews were conducted on the pier during its visit to the resort in July. They have now sent us the footage of this."
Nick Goff, museum manager, said: "This will be an exhibition that grows over time. It will be ongoing as materials from the pier are carefully salvaged.
"It is not just the big noticeable things that are important, sometimes it is the everyday things that trigger an emotional response from the visitors.
"Graphic display boards with photos and historical information will also form part of the exhibition.
"The pier's an important part of the heritage of the town and the museum is about bringing together all this, so we are pleased to work with the pier owners.
"The fire is going to be one of those moments in time that stick in people's minds and I think it's important that the museum should reflect that.
"There is both genuine interest and sadness in the loss of the pier as many people felt an emotional attachment to the pier and its fate."
The Michaels are determined to rebuild the seaside attraction for future generations and have several plans in the pipeline.
They include a new dragster attraction, which could be installed above the shelters that run down the centre of the Grand Pier.

“OMG. Another pier story!
I see the Michaels are taking any opportunity to cash in on this. Seems to me that this 'disaster' was the best thing to happen for them in a long time. They must be rubbing their hands in glee.
Don't worry folks I'm sure that as well as being able to build a shiny new pier they will have some kind of loss of earnings clause in the policy so all this will be extra revenue (.. er..I mean rebuilding fund money!) for them”
