Weston Grand Pier design is down to two
Two designs have been shortlisted for the new pavilion on Weston-super- Mare's Grand Pier.
Joint Weston pier owners Kerry and Michelle Michael chose the designs after a public consultation.
They listened to views of residents after showcasing six proposals at an exhibition in the resort.
They were by four Bristol-based architects, Stride Treglown, Acanthus Ferguson Mann, Angus Meek and AWW, along with two from London, Grimshaw and Ray Hole.
The designs by Angus Meek, and Ray Hole's have been picked as finalists.
They have been asked to refine their ideas for a head-to-head showdown.
The winner of the competition to redesign the pavilion will be chosen within two weeks.
Mr Michael said: "All the architects' submissions were impressive and they have all put a tremendous amount of work into their designs.
"We would like to thank every one of them for their efforts.
"What we have had to do now is to look at the practicalities and costings of the proposals, as well as take into consideration what they look like.
"Angus Meek's submission complied with all our brief requirements and is the most traditional in appearance, with corner towers which sympathise with the old Pavilion.
"Ray Hole's design is a lightweight structure that can be delivered to site without requiring large cranes and lifting equipment and has been costed within our specified budget."
Angus Meek's design most resembles a pier pavilion structure but incorporates a modern twist with huge coloured glass fronting up to five storeys showcasing what the complex has to offer from afar.
All the bright colours are continued throughout in four red corner cylinder stairwells to upper floors and coloured beach hut bays for seating and meeting places.
The scheme boasts a full-height central main hall to allow large attractions, as well as levels featuring walkways and bridges and a continuous glass strip throughout to light the complex.
It also includes a private mid deck, restaurant area, function rooms, a wave-like undercover walkway along the pier waist, a wide promenade around the building and wind turbines.
Ray Hole's idea is a metal dome-like complex on two levels, with glass windows and four corner wind turbines.
The firm proposes to remove the existing central structure and install glazed curved-edged windbreakers along the walkway edge, with new seating.
It would keep the land train and several stations would be introduced along with a crèche, conference facility, gallery and amusement area.
Mr Michael hopes a planning application will be submitted before Christmas.
