Westall seals a dramatic win for Dings Crusaders
Lydney 26 Dings Crusaders 27: Dings claimed victory in a game where the lead changed hands four times, thanks to an Adam Westall penalty in the dying minutes.
Despite outscoring the home side by four tries to two, Dings looked in deep trouble early on, trailing 16-0 after 20 minutes. However, three tries in five minutes either side of half-time got them back in the match and set up the win.
The opening exchanges were dominated by a rampant Lydney pack and they took the lead after five minutes with a penalty from stand-off Tony Wicks, who added a further penalty and drop goal to give the home side a 9-0 lead.
With Dings starved of the ball, Lydney stretched their lead on 20 minutes with a try from wing Nev Codlin, who gathered a poor clearance kick and ran in a try from just inside the Dings half. Wicks added the conversion.
The Dings pack eventually began to take control and pressurise the Lydney line, with flanker Stean Williams and scrum-half Neil Dipple both held up over the try-line.
With the clock ticking down to half-time, more pressure on the home side's try-line saw Dings wing Chris Wright-Hider break the defence to score under the posts. Westall added the conversion.
Straight from the restart, Dings were back on the Lydney line and, from a good line-out take by flanker Mitch Quoi, the pack drove over the line for prop Tim Brockett to score out wide. This made the half-time score 16-12 to the hosts, but the momentum was firmly with Dings.
The visitors took the second-half kick-off and Lydney failed to gather ball, allowing Dings No 8 Gavin Curry, who had a fine game, to gather the ball and charge over for a try under the posts. Westall added the conversion to take Dings into the lead for the first time.
Ten minutes later Dings were reduced to 13 men, with replacement lock Rob Rees, who had only been on the field for only one minute, and prop Tim Brockett sin-binned in quick succession.
Lydney immediately took advantage with a try from centre Chris Holder, converted by Wicks, to regain the lead. Wicks then added a further penalty to stretch the home side's lead to seven points at 26-19.
Restored to 15 men, Dings got back on top and after 10 minutes of pressure deep in the home side's half, replacement scrum-half Ricky Jones darted over in the corner for a try to set up a tense final 10 minutes. Pressure from the Dings pack eventually told, with Westall slotting over the winning penalty two minutes from time.

“Having attended this game I was surprised there was no mention of the uncontested scrums in this match. I was under the impression this was an area the RFU had new laws about and it appeared as though Dings did not abide by the new regulations by not putting on a replacement prop, following a sin binning, when one was clearly available on the bench.”
