Three local teenagers will be playing golf in the Abu Dhabi sun at the end of the month as members of an elite squad of young British players.

Myles Angel, 16, from Clevedon and Michaela Chivers, 14, from Farrington, qualified during the summer for the Abu Dhabi Junior Golf Championship presented by The Daily Telegraph.

But both have been playing a waiting game and only learned within the last month that their performances were good enough to be earn a place among the talented players on the week-long trip.

The third member, world traveller Chris Lloyd, received a phone call a couple of weeks ago offering him a place as a sponsors' invite.

The 17-year-old Kendleshire player said: "I am honoured to be invited and will be making my first trip to Abu Dhabi. It will be a great chance to play golf in the sunshine at this time of year." He will also be able to renew his rivalry with qualifier Tom Lewis (Welwyn Garden City), who beat him in a five-hole play-off for the Carris Trophy this year and went on to play for England in the Home Internationals.

Angell, who chipped in on the 18th hole for his seventh birdie in winning Clevedon's Junior Open with a five-under-par 67, was playing off five at the time. His handicap is now two.

The Filton College student celebrated qualifying by travelling for a week's break in Spain where he watched Clevedon club colleague John Morgan finish 21st in the Castellon Masters, near Valencia.

He watched Morgan play all four rounds and was introduced to several leading players, among them Justin Rose, a former Telegraph winner, and Sergio Garcia.

Last week the Clevedon Junior and Open champion won the Henbury Junior Open and was joint runner-up at Bristol and Clifton the following day.

Angell, who has been playing for six years and comes from Portishead, said: This is going to be a great adventure for me and my aim is to win the event."

Chivers, who plays off five and attends Somervale School in Midsomer Norton, broke the women's course record with one-under-par 72 in winning the club's Junior Open.

She said: "It's exciting, as I have never played golf abroad. I simply can't wait to go as it's going to be a tremendous experience, not only for me but for my parents who are coming as well. I would love to do well but realise there will be a lot of good players there from all over the country. I'll just do my best."

Chivers was a member of the Super Birdie national training squad and received coaching from Sarah Claridge at the Kendleshire.

She will be competing against two other West girls, Wiltshire's Hannah Turland (Tidworth), runner-up in this year's British Amateur Strokeplay Championship and the English Girls Under-15 championship, and Dorset's Georgia Hall (Ferndown), the English Girls Under-13 champion.

The 20 best young golfers from the UK and Ireland from leave on November 24 for the 54-hole tournament.

The week opens with a special challenge match between the visitors and 21 of the United Arab Emirates' best young players.
