West bowlers left disappointed after England trial
The English women's international bowls trial, held in Bristol at the weekend, offered hope for several of the West's best players – and particularly for the North Wilts quartet who lifted the national fours title last winter.
But there was only disappointment for Sue Cooke, Carol Grenfell, Janet Hardies and Alex Jacobs when the team was announced, because there was no place for them in the squad or among the reserves.
The claims of Yeovil's Mo Monkton, who was hoping for a recall to the England side after missing out last year, were also overlooked, and only two new caps were awarded – to Pam Cutts, from Nottingham, and Cumbria's Janice Gower.

Wiltshire's England bowler Graham Shadwell teamed up with Yorkshire's Mark Walton yesterday to post two more wins in the Hong Kong International Classic Pairs at the Craigengower Cricket Club.
After taking an early 10-0 lead against Sha Tin duo Wong Chun Yat and Stanley Ho, the England duo, who won the title in 2004, held on grimly as the local hopes put them under pressure – and were glad to get home 15-13.
Under floodlights last night, they kept their unbeaten record intact with a 21-8 win over local police officers Adrian Kwan and Andy Chan – and maintained their place at the top of the section league table.
