A weekly car boot sale will be held once again in Whitchurch after an absence of more than a year.

The event had been running at Hengrove Park every Saturday since 1986, attracting some 300 traders and 2,000 customers from as far afield as Cardiff, Gloucester and Swindon.

But the city council called a halt late in 2007 claiming they had caught rogue traders selling illegally copied DVDs there.

Now, after months of negotiations, organiser Steve Edwards, of Westerleigh, has been granted a licence to restart the car boot sale. The first will be held this Saturday and there will also be sales on Easter Friday, Saturday and Monday.

Mr Edwards said: "I've been given the go ahead finally.

"I've had lots of phone calls all through the winter from people asking if the car boot sale is on or not.

"It's great to be back."

New parking and traffic control systems will be in force. Entry and parking is free.

“It's not actually £25 per stall but in fact £10 for a car, slightly more for a van. Only £25 if you pay for the advantage of being there hours early to set up and get the initial custom (optional) I hope Paul got his facts right before contacting the council and trying to ruin things for everyone else.”

“The car boot sale is great, but the organizer Steve? Is a total disgrace
£25.00 to set up a stall, he owns the poor quality burger van and insists on no other food on the site I.e. if you had a box of crisp for sale he would shout at you and threaten to throw you out.
Today about 200 stalls at £25 each plus his burger van way over £5000
    For one day.
I will contact the council and the tax man”

“Great - but where exactly is it, what time can you come to set up, how much is it please?
Details like this are very much needed! Also a contact phone number would be useful. Thanks”

    “This is great news.
    Please can youy tell me:
    What time it is on?
What is the fee for sellers?
Is it in the old field it used to be in (on the grass)?
Can you give me a postcode for my Sat Nav.

    Thanks
    Kath”
