Chris Lloyd sunk a spectacular 107-yard pitching wedge approach shot at his last hole to record a level par 72 at Sawgrass in the second round of the Junior Players Championship in Florida.

It was the highlight of his week and helped him into a tie for 19th out of 75 players in the international field over the famous TPC Stadium course.

Lloyd had been cruising at two under through 12 holes, but a run of four bogeys over the next five holes left him at two over with one to play before his great finish.

The Kendleshire champion opened with a four-over 76 and closed with the same score for an eight-over aggregate over 54 holes.

His England squad playing companion Max Smith (Newbury) had a two under par 70 for the lowest round of the final day to move to 11th.

It was a week Lloyd will never forget. He said: "We can now appreciate just what it is like to be a tour pro and play in an event like the Players Championship. Some of the pin positions were very difficult. It was the best junior tournament I have played in."

As Lloyd returned from his latest overseas trip, his Bristol international colleague Adam Carson (Long Ashton) will embark on his own transatlantic mission on Saturday.

His destination is the Canadian Junior Invitational Championship being held near Toronto as one of a four-player England team. There are both individual and team awards. England won the event last year.

"I am after the individual title as I am playing really well at the moment," said Carson, aged 17.

The trip concluded a season that has already taken him to Spain, Holland (twice) and America. His next trip will be winter training with England at Arcos Gardens in Spain.
