Darren Way played a key role in Yeovil Town's latest League One victory even though he remains sidelined with the injuries he suffered from his horrific car crash before Christmas.

The midfielder talked his former Swansea City team-mate Shaun MacDonald into moving to Huish Park on loan and the 20-year-old grabbed the winner against Huddersfield on his debut.

MacDonald fired the only goal of the game to push Yeovil five points clear of the League One relegation zone.

"Darren had a big part in me coming here," he revealed. "He said a lot of things about the club and he is a guy I really liked from Swansea. If it wasn't for him I am not sure I would have come, but I'm here.

"I spoke to him on Tuesday morning. He tried calling me on Monday night but my phone was off because I wanted a good night's sleep.

"He is a great lad. He is someone I got on with from his Swansea days and I trust him. Obviously I wish him a speedy recovery from the accident."

MacDonald's goal came just 24 hours after he first heard about the prospect of a move to Yeovil.

"I had a chat with the Swansea gaffer (Roberto Martinez) on Monday night and I found out for definite on Tuesday morning and I was straight down to Yeovil for the game in the matter of a day," he explained.

"The game was the first time I have seen all the lads but they all seem genuine and Darren told me about them. I came here to play as many games as I can before I go back to Swansea."

MacDonald scored in first half stoppage time to help erase memories of his first couple of touches in a Yeovil shirt when he sliced a 20-yard shot well wide.

"I thought I was in for a nightmare when that happened," he smiled. "But I kept my confidence up and I am a strong lad and I just kept going and got the goal and man-of-the-match and I am happy with how it went."

MacDonald has a Wales Under-21 international friendly in Northern Ireland to look forward to early next month. Fortunately it doesn't clash with a club game.

"I also want to be looking at the international side of things but I have just got to try to enjoy my football for Yeovil now," he said.

MacDonald arrived in Somerset because of the central midfield injury crisis that has struck the squad.

And there was more bad news yesterday when the Football Association confirmed Yeovil will be without two key players for next Tuesday's trip to Crewe Alexandra through suspension.

Both joint-top scorer Danny Schofield and stand-in skipper Terrell Forbes received a fifth yellow card of the season during Tuesday's win over Huddersfield.

A one-match ban kicks in seven days after the game so they will both be available for Saturday's trip to Leyton Orient.

Yeovil are still assessing the ankle injury suffered by Luke Rodgers against Huddersfield but he must be a doubt for the game at Brisbane Road. However, skipper and centre half Terry Skiverton is available again after a ban.

Meanwhile, it is understood that an announcement on the settlement of Marc Bircham's contract is imminent.

The 30-year-old midfielder is set to retire from professional football after long-term ankle trouble. Bircham's departure may allow manager Russell Slade to add another player to his small squad.

The agent of right back Craig Alcock is in talks with the club over a new contract. Alcock's current deal expires in June.

Tonight's Legends game to mark the 60th anniversary of Yeovil's famous FA Cup win over Sunderland has been postponed, after the Huish Park pitch cut up extremely badly during the Huddersfield match and another game on it so soon could cause serious long-term damage. It is hoped that a date at the end of the season can be arranged to stage the match.
