Watkins relishing full Cheltenham Town debut
Marley Watkins will make his full debut for Cheltenham Town on Tuesday night and has been told to "light up Whaddon Road" by boss Martin Allen.
The Welsh wing wizard has made exciting substitute appearances at Stockport County and Leeds United in the past week and will start against Millwall for what will also be his first home senior appearance.
The exciting 18-year-old youth-team product set up Cheltenham's best chance of the match for Lloyd Owusu at Elland Road on Saturday.
He was also heavily involved in the move that led to Nicholas Bignall powering in a diving header, which was disallowed for offside in the second half as the Robins lost 2-0, but the travelling fans were singing Watkins' name.
Watkins was called into his manager's office after training on Monday as Allen broke the news to his father that he would be making his first senior start.
"The gaffer rang my dad on loud speaker and told him in front of me that I would be starting, which was nice," Watkins said.
"It's a massive buzz and I am looking forward to it. I just hope I can do well for the team and help us get a win because we have been unlucky recently and we really need results now."
Watkins has looked assured in all four of his first-team run-outs and he said playing in front of more than 20,000 fans at Leeds did not faze him.
"I am confident and I believe in myself so I have loved it," he added.
"It was awesome to play at Elland Road and I was excited to show people what I can do – the more people who are there to see it the better."
Watkins, who is 6ft 1in and still growing, was picked up at the Football League exit trials as an Under-16 after being released from Swansea City.
He was born in London, but raised in Wales. Along with fellow scholar Jack Durrant, Watkins has been offered a professional contract for next season, with the option of another year, but he is yet to put pen to paper.
"I definitely want to sign for Cheltenham, but I am just going to think through it and discuss it with my family," he said.
