A second case of meningitis has been reported at University of Bristol, just a week after a student died from the disease.

The most recent patient was admitted to the Bristol Royal Infirmary Thursday night and was said to be making reasonable progress yesterday.

A male first year student died on November 21, two days after being admitted to the same hospital with meningococcal meningitis. Neither has so far been named.

The Health Protection Agency, charity Meningitis UK and the university have all issued a warning for other students to be on guard as they are particularly at risk.

Yesterday, the university wrote to all students and staff reminding them of the signs and symptoms of the bacterial infection.

The HPA's Avon Health Protection Team is working to identify any people who may have been at an increased risk of infection as a result of being household contacts of the second student so that they can be given preventative medication.

Dr Joyshri Sarangi, HPA consultant in communicable disease control, said: "We understand there will be heightened concern among students with a new case of meningitis coming so soon after the tragic death of a student.

"We are looking into the circumstances in detail, but at this point there is no direct link between the two cases."
