Warning as icy roads take their toll
Drivers are being warned to take care on the roads in the wintry conditions after ambulance staff were called out to 25 incidents in a five-hour period.
The Great Western Ambulance Service got 34 calls across the area it serves between 7am and noon on Wednesday (January 21) . Many of the incidents involved vehicles overturning, as well as collisions involving motorbikes and cyclists. Icy conditions were blamed for most of them.
In Wick St Lawrence, near Weston-super-Mare, a 29-year-old man had a lucky escape when his car spun off Ebdon Road and ended up on its roof in a ditch.
The man managed to get out through a rear passenger door as the waters in the ditch rose around.
Paramedic Phil Goodway, who attended a number of the incidents, said: "Many of these collisions could have been prevented if people took more care when driving in wintry conditions."

“Might be a few less of these shunts if North Somerset Council actually gritted and salted our roads more widely. Many of the back roads, yet commuter routes, were slippery this morning. Would love to know if NSC can account for which roads they have gritted. I'm sure the insurance companies would be quite interested too!”
