Brian Rose believes Somerset's young leg-spinner Max Waller needs more experience before being unleashed on the four-day game.

Waller, 21, who was handed a senior debut in the Friends Provident Trophy last month, has taken seven wickets in Somerset's Twenty20 Cup campaign.

But the leg-spinner was yesterday replaced by Michael Munday in the squad of 13 named for the three away LV County Championship clashes, which start at Old Trafford against Lancashire today before trips to Yorkshire and Sussex.

"I am happy to see Max playing one-day cricket at the moment," said director of cricket Rose.

"I would also like him to have some prolonged spells in the second XI to work on turning his leg-break more. Although Michael and Max are both leg-spinners, they are very different types of bowler.

"Max has a very good temperament and is steadier, but Michael turns the ball more, particularly his leg-break, and has already taken 13 wickets in a Championship match against Notts. He has to work on greater consistency of line and length, but can really rip it on helpful pitches.

"The pitch at Old Trafford is usually a good cricket wicket, giving a bit of help to the seamers early on and the spinners later in the game. We will have a look at it before naming a side."

David Stiff and Mark Turner are in the squad, but there is still no Andy Caddick, who needs to get overs under his belt in the second XI before returning to first-team action after back trouble. "Andy is ready to bowl, but the earliest I could see him being involved in Championship cricket is now the Sussex game," Rose added. "David and Mark may well compete for one place alongside our more regular seamers. It is going to be a tough couple of weeks and we could need to make changes to freshen up our attack."
