Somerset leg-spinner Max Waller admits being named in the England Performance Programme is "inspiring".

The 21-year-old did not make his Somerset CCC first-team debut until the Twenty20 Cup in May, but is already rated as one of the most promising wrist spinners in the country.

Waller will join Gloucestershire CCC left-arm spinner Vikram Banerjee and paceman Ian Saxelby for England and Wales Cricket Board coaching at the National Academy at Loughborough next month, and in South Africa in December.

The trip to the Rainbow Nation will see the West trio coached by former international stars Graham Gooch, Allan Donald and Saqlain Mushtaq.

"I am delighted at the prospect of developing my bowling through the ECB spin development programme," said Waller, who will no doubt be keen to pick the brain of former Pakistan off-spinner Saqlain.

"I understand the areas of my game I have got to work on and being given the opportunity to work with experienced, highly-regarded coaches is inspiring."

Waller, Banerjee and Saxelby are part of Category C of the Performance Programme which means they are regarded as three to five years away from international cricket.

It is a major move forward for former Millfield Schoolboy Waller, who did not play for England Under-19s.

Saxelby was a regular at youth level for his country and enjoyed an encouraging first season with Gloucestershire after joining from Nottinghamshire last winter.

Banerjee's selection is a surprise as he was far from a regular in the county side with Gloucestershire often preferring to pick Richard Dawson as their spinner.

All three will be hoping to impress enough to be named on the England Lions tour in the new year.

Category A and B players will back up the senior England squad on their four-Test tour of South Africa which starts later this month.
