Wakefield looks to keep impressive form going
Backwell School student Bethan Wakefield is making quite an impression on the indoor scene this winter.
The 14-year-old, who lives in Yatton and competes for Welsh club Newport Harriers, has opened the new year in dramatic style.
First she won a hat-trick of titles in the South West Championships, winning the Under-15s 60m (8.14secs), 200m (27.54secs) and long jump events (4.94m), setting new personal bests in all three events.
Then last weekend she won three events – the two-lap race plus the standing long and triple jumps – in the Avon Schools' Sports Hall Championships held at Bristol Grammar School.
"The two-lap race was my best win and I'll probably do that and the standing long jump at the South West Sportshall Championships," said Wakefield.
"It has been a very good start to the season."
Wakefield will be looking for further success when she takes part in the Aviva England Athletics Championships, which will be held at the National Indoor Arena, in Birmingham, on the weekend of February 14-15.
She added: "I have entered the Under-15s 60m and long jump and hopefully I can do well."
Before that, Wakefield will be part of the Avon team heading to the regional finals of the Sportshall Championships in Torbay next weekend. Team manager Dave Turner is hoping for more local success.
"Avon should have a strong squad going to Torbay and we have the potential to do very well," said Turner.
