Volunteers give Bristol community centre a makeover
A community centre in Whitchurch has had a makeover thanks to more than 80 people who have given their spare time and skills.
Whitchurch Folk House in East Dundry Lane dates back to the 16th century and is the oldest building in Whitchurch.
It was once a farmhouse and its stone walls and wooden beams have stood the test of time, but it needed updating.
Since 1977, it has been the hub of community life in Whitchurch and is in constant use.
The Whitchurch Folk House Association has a whist club, chess club, dressmaking club, art club and a special World Cup room, which can be hired by football fans just to watch World Cup matches.
Retired fireman Geoff Lovell has been the chairman for the past 25 years and has spent the past week decorating one of the rooms with a team of five helpers.
He said: "The building was in need of some tender loving care. We had a quote of £15,000 just to do two toilets, so that motivated me to rally the troops.
"I drew up 10 tasks that needed doing and got 10 members to take on the tasks. Each person then got their own team together to do the work.
"Luckily we have all the trades covered. We have carpenters, painters, electricians and carpet layers."
Between 80 and 90 members have being getting home from their day job and then working through until midnight on the building work.
Mr Lovell said: "Nothing much had been done since 1977 so there was a lot of work to do. There have been groups of people here at different times from 8am to midnight every day.
"Everybody provided labour at no cost. We've only had to pay for the materials.
"It's been a great bonding experience."
Last year, the garden had a makeover and now has a French boules pitch and children's play area.
Members were due to celebrate the end of the magnificent makeover job with a fun-filled pig roast today.
