Visit by Finnish youngsters could be the first of many

Children at a school in Kingswood were paid a special visit from overseas.

Courtney Primary School welcomed a group of 30 Finnish students, their teachers and parents.

Courtney Primary has had a link with Rajala Primary in Kuopio, east of Helsinki, since 2007 when the headteacher, Keith Ledbury, paid the school a visit.

Since then, four additional teachers from the school have visited Kuopio and planned for the Finnish visit. Children have also been exchanging letters, emails and work.

During the week-long stay the Finnish children, who are aged 12 and 13, have stayed with host families from Courtney Primary.

This exchange is the first of its kind for a primary school in South Gloucestershire.

Children from both schools had a busy week, with a concert being performed jointly by the Finnish children and the Year 6 children from Courtney entitled Eddie the Penguin Saves The World!

They also visited several local attractions, such as Bath and the Kingswood Heritage Museum.

Mr Ledbury said: "The children from both schools have benefited a great deal from this link which encourages learning in a global dimension in a very real context.

"We hope this visit is the first of many to Courtney from our Finnish friends in Kuopio."
