Visit by Finnish youngsters could be the first of many
Children at a school in Kingswood were paid a special visit from overseas.
Courtney Primary School welcomed a group of 30 Finnish students, their teachers and parents.
Courtney Primary has had a link with Rajala Primary in Kuopio, east of Helsinki, since 2007 when the headteacher, Keith Ledbury, paid the school a visit.
Since then, four additional teachers from the school have visited Kuopio and planned for the Finnish visit. Children have also been exchanging letters, emails and work.
During the week-long stay the Finnish children, who are aged 12 and 13, have stayed with host families from Courtney Primary.
This exchange is the first of its kind for a primary school in South Gloucestershire.
Children from both schools had a busy week, with a concert being performed jointly by the Finnish children and the Year 6 children from Courtney entitled Eddie the Penguin Saves The World!
They also visited several local attractions, such as Bath and the Kingswood Heritage Museum.
Mr Ledbury said: "The children from both schools have benefited a great deal from this link which encourages learning in a global dimension in a very real context.
"We hope this visit is the first of many to Courtney from our Finnish friends in Kuopio."
