Village prepares for rag day celebrations this weekend
The annual Rag celebrations take place in Pill this weekend.
Hundreds of revellers are expected to pack onto the village green on Saturday for the 88th Pill Rag.
This year the 12-strong committee is going green and encouraging people to join the parade through the village on foot.
The decision to make the event more eco friendly came after organisers and community groups found it difficult to find lorries for parade floats.
Collectors armed with green buckets will walk alongside the parade collecting cash for local charities.
Pill Rag committee chairwoman, Pauline McDade, has been helping organise the event for the last 20 years.
Mrs McDade said they have about half a dozen floats which will be taking part but thought that this year, because of this problem, it was a good time to go green so the committee has been encouraging more walking entries.
Last year more than £1500 was raised for good causes in the village and organisers hope to beat that amount this year.
The event kicks off at 10.30am with a pet show and stalls will set up on the green from 1pm.
There will be a fancy dress competition at 1.30pm and the final of an X Factor style competition, called Rag Factor, starts at 3pm.
Heats for the singing contest were held at the five pubs around the village, with the best two from each going through to the final.
An adult fancy dress competition takes place at 6pm and Rag King Sam Hunt, 21, and Queen Helen Brayley, 21, will be officially crowned by BBC weather girl Jemma Cooper at 6.45pm.
The Rag royalty will be assisted by Queen Mother, Mandy Bradley, 46, and attendant Samantha Burton, 17.
The procession starts at 7pm before returning to the green for a night of music by the Axe Factor Band.
