Dressed as a Viking, Paul Drake was fancy dress class winner in the Mendip Vale club's Turkey Team Trial at Churchill on Saturday, but his loss of 20 marks in the three-lap, 12-section event ruled him out of a poultry prize for his side, who finished in second place.

Winners were Terry Harris, Jason Atwell, Rob Hill and Roy Wells, who all left the prizegiving at the Langford Inn with oven-ready turkeys for their Christmas table.

Harris and Atwell put the side on the road to success by appearing in fancy dress, thus earning bonus points for their team.

Drake's team of Dave Cottle, Richard Sully, Dave Blackburn and Andy Blacker all received chickens instead of the usual silverware.

Kevin Lennox also wore fancy dress but he could not prevent his team from finishing last of 13 sides, all of whom had to make do with plum puddings.

More than 60 competitors supported the annual charity event.

A single mark separated Stephen Martin and Wheddon Cross scaffolder Nick Baker after three laps of 15 sections in the Lyn club's Baker Cup Trial near Lynton, North Devon, on Sunday.

More than 40 braved icy road conditions in the area to take part in the annual pre-Christmas event at Scoresdown.

Baker outclassed Martin on the first lap, losing 14 marks to Martin's 20, but the latter closed the gap to two on the second lap, and he went ahead halfway through the final lap, during which he lost six to Baker's nine.
