Should St George's day be celebrated as a national holiday?

That's the question Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore wants debated in parliament.

  1. Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore

Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore believes St George's Day should be a day of national celebration

Mr Skidmore wants us to embrace St George's day and he believes the best way of doing this would be through a bank holiday, where families and communities could come together to celebrate our national identity.

As vice-chairman of an all-party group on St George's Day, Mr Skidmore is pressing for an open debate on the issue to gauge the popularity of his proposal.

He believes it could be possible to move one of the May bank holidays, helping to negate any economic concerns around creating an additional national holiday.

Mr Skidmore is hoping to galvanise support for a debate on the issue, and his proposals are backed by Dennis Stinchcombe MBE Chairman of the City of Bristol Royal Society of St George.

Mr Stinchcombe thinks the proposal for a bank holiday celebration could help reclaim St George's Day, and in particular the cross of St George, back from any association with anti-social behaviour and right-wing groups. He says St George is a multi-cultural saint and should be celebrated as one.

    “Again you misunderstand.

Patritism is a love of ones Country. Simple.

Nationilism is a political ideology and a whole different ball game.

Please try not to brand a patriot as a Nationalist as its insulting.

My beliefs are common mutual respect to all, honesty, pride and commitment to go through life in the best way I possibly can.

If you believe some of those are negative then thats your opinion and I respect that.

But before you jump in , again do not mix up MY beliefs with those of others.

You can have pride in yourself without it being detrimental to others.

    You should try it.”

“You do not know the difference do you? Well they do say ignorance is bliss.

Amongst other things a nationalist believes his/her and his/her country opinion to be right, all other countries and peoples opinions are inferior.
Now I would say YOU are showing some serious Nationalistic traits, your way or the highway by any chance? if you do not agree you spew insults and hatred. The fact you have the nerve to tell other people to grow up astounds me

Whats it to you what peple are proud of?”

“Isn't funny how nationalists try to dissociate themselves from all the negative aspects of their beliefs? it is a curiously hypocritical stance.

And I've still yet to see a reason why you should take pride in what someone else who just happened to be born near you has done. Well, unless it is to make up for your own personal inadequacy, I suppose.”

“Sextons nose, as Evilhomer points out there is a difference between the two.

However, do not confuse ones patriotism for their country with automatic hatred for all others. I guess this is what you allude to?

Again, you are the epitomy of all that is wrong with those who frown upon us taking pride in ourselves, our people and our nation. Have you ever considered that this debate continually rages precisely because you cannot accept that just because someone has pride in their country of birth that they also happily accept all those other countrys people who hold the same feeling for their homelands?

    I guess not.”

    “I call Nationalism, Nationalism
I call Patriotism, (wait for it) Patriotism
    There is a difference

After all, I would not mistake a narrow minded keyboard bully with someone with a difference of opinion and a capability for healthy debate.

Go ask George Orwell , he'll tell ya”

“Hmm, lets think - how many have been killed in the name of nationalism (or patriotism, call it what you like?). I don't think nationalists are in a position to hand out lectures on morality.

And, actually, no, being charitiable, moral, whatever are things people can do without any regard to this twaddle.

    I repeat. Grow up.”

“Sextons nose, unfortunately it is people like you that have caused our country to lose it's sense of identity.

In your world we would have no regards for our history, our fellow countryman and what we as a nation are trying to achieve or not.

We'd purely look out for ourselves.

Thankfully there are still many, many people that are proud of what they have achieved, what their values are, what we have achieved for and stand for as a country as well as individuals.

And it those people that I am most proud of, not the selfish, insular, bitter types like yourself.”

    “sextons nose,
you need to publish a manual on what people should do with they're limited amount of pride, you can brand if it isn't my way its childish.
Childish behaviour is labelling people all with one brush, accusing people of Nationalism when its quite plain that they are being patriotic.
I think its you who needs to grow up and let people decide for themselves without resulting to childish insults.”

“You should be proud of what you yourself do, or what those close to you do.

Being proud of people who just happen to be born near you is ridiculous.

    Childish twaddle. Grow up.”

“Despite those who wish to bring down those who are proud of where they come from I am still one of those people who is proud of what our country has achieved, what it is doing now and the values the people hold (The majority of people!)

Shout all you want about "Nationalism" etc but the truth is that there are those of us proud to be from England. You wont change that however much you try!”
