Victory for Old Bristolians Westbury may not be enough to take the title

James King says he will be biting his nails waiting for the results from Bristol & North Somerset tomorrow evening.

King, captain of Old Bristolians Westbury, takes his side to strugglers Nailsea on top of the division and on the brink of a return to Bristol & Somerset after a one-year absence.

But King believes the title race is far from clear-cut – and a low-scoring win might not be enough to claim the prize.

Just over two points separate the top five sides, with Bristolians top on 14.38 average points.

The next five sides are placed as follows: Chipping Sodbury (14.29), Frenchay (14.2), Congresbury (13.86) and Claverham (13.36). Sodbury host Congresbury and Frenchay travel to Claverham. King said: "It is going to be nail-biting because it is so close. Frenchay are third and they are still in it – if they get a good win they could go top.

"It is going to be one of those days, because we will not be 100 per cent sure we have won the league even if we beat Nailsea.

"It depends on how many points each team gets. The maximum number of points a team can get in this division is 25, but that's very unlikely.

"That happens if you bowl a side out for 225 and chase it successfully without losing a wicket.

"But if you claim 20 points from a match then that's a pretty good win. Let's put it this way, I'd be disappointed to win with 20 points and not win the title."

Bristolians went top last weekend after inflicting a second successive defeat on one-time title favourites Sodbury.

The South Gloucestershire side had won eight matches on the trot before losing to Bishopston.

But Sodbury failed with the bat and made only 110 when batting first against Failand-based Bristolians.

In reply, Felix Currell (44) and Alex Harris (26) laid the platform for victory even though Bristolians lost six wickets along the way.

King added: "Sodbury are a good side and have a very good bowling attack. They have bowled a lot of teams out for not many runs. We bowled and fielded well but we had a bit of a nervous run chase. We lost a few early wickets, myself included. We chucked away a few league points when we lost a couple of late wickets. But it was a good result."

King lost the toss on Saturday – he hasn't won the coin toss since the fourth match of the season.

But he is hoping for a good victory on Saturday and a return to Bristol & Somerset.

"We have a lot of players here that played for the club when we were in Premier Two," reflected King. "The standard of the league has improved, particularly the Somerset teams.

"Hopefully we can get into the league above, because it is a better quality division.

"We are ambitious to play at a higher level. We desperately want to get promoted and, if we go up, it becomes easier to attract players of a higher calibre."

“I would never have guessed you were 'desperate' to win the league. You REALLY deserve it......”
