Hambrook's Trevor Jones retained the Gloucester and Somerset PGA Matchplay Championship by beating Chris Murphy, from Rodway Hill, by one hole in the final over the Cherington Course at Minchinhampton.

Last year he completed the double by also winning the championship but he had to be content with second place behind John Goymer (Wheathill) this year.

Former Chipping Sodbury amateur Jones, aged 26, has hopes of eventually becoming a European Tour player. But he is making his mark in regional events for the moment.

The 2008 Welsh national champion overcame Steve Ritchie (Farrington) at the first extra hole with a birdie in the quarter final. In the other gamses, Filton's Daryl Kelley beat Ed Goodwin (Cirencester) on the last. Murphy thrashed James Harraway (South Cerney) 4 and 3 while the match of the tournament was fought between the two Brean professionals David Haines and Andrew March.

March, who overcame Long Ashton's Roy Holland at the third extra hole in the morning, was engaged in an even longer marathon. This time 22 holes were needed before March won on his 43rd hole of the day.

The weather changed from sunshine to drizzle on the second day. In the first semi-final Jones defeated Kelley 2 and 1, while Murphy was four under par in beating March on the 14th hole.

The final was to produce some more excellent golf from both players with each of them well under par by the end.

Jones started with three successive birdies. But Murphy squared the match by the 13th and some good putting kept the game level.

The match was summed up on the tricky 17th green where Murphy rolled in a nine-footer before Jones followed him in from six feet to take game to the last.

Murphy's approach at the 18th found the front bunker while Jones hit a majestic six-iron to four feet. Murphy made his 12-foot putt for a four but Jones calmly rolled in the winning birdie.

Chris Lloyd, pictured right, helped the South West Counties tie the Midlands 7.5 in the annual representative match with two exciting victories at Saunton.

The 17-year-old Kendleshire player partnered Nick Day (Henbury) to a one hole win over Ross Overton and Dave Elliott in the foursomes which the visitors took 3-2.

Next he made successive birdies at the 16th and 17th to beat Jarred McKnight (Whittington Heath) in the singles. James Dimond (East Devon) was the only other player with a 100 per cent record.

Somerset's representative Phil White (Wells), the South West Strokeplay Champion, lost both matches. Day had a chance to snatch victory for the South West as the singles anchor man. He failed to square his game on the 15th, despite Fred Jewsbury (Ladbrook Park) losing a ball, and then three-putted the 17th to lose 2 and 1.

Lloyd said: "I think a half was a fair result to the match that was played in great spirit. It was nice to return to matchplay on such a lovely golf course."

After breaking up for half-term the Kingswood (Bath) schoolboy was off on another overseas mission. He flew to Houston, Texas, for a week's practice.

He said: "I played in Texas earlier in the year and friends there invited me back. With all the great facilities available it has given me a chance of some useful practice."

● It was a case of fifth time lucky for Burnham and Berrow who had been defeated finalists in the Somerset County Pickeridge Bowl each year since 2005.

This time Burnham, currently Somerset club champions, fielded a strong scratch team – much to the disappointment of Tall Pines who were crushed 4.5-0.5. County first team player Justin Lane won the final match 5 and 4.
