Victory for Filton's Roger Willett
FILTON'S Roger Willett, pictured ,won this year's Gloucestershire County Seniors Open final over Minchinhampton's Avening course by carding 39 Stableford points off a handicap of 22.
He said: "It is great to win such a prestigious tournament in my club's centenary year and is a moment I will never forget."
His prize for winning the higher handicap category was a trophy and a crystal sideboard bowl, plus a weekend break for two in Cornwall at the Carylon Bay Hotel in the spring.
The 70 finalists, from an entry of 3,600 players, qualified by winning one of the handicap categories at either their club's or a County Senior Open day.
The event is sponsored by the Consultant Eye Surgeons Partnership (CESP) based at Cheltenham and Bristol.
Minchinhampton Old Course's Alan Dangerfield, playing off five, equalled the winning score but lost on countback. He did , however, win the low handicap trophy.
County secretary Ian Watkins said: "It was a wonderful day for the county grass roots seniors, who were able to show that golf is a sport for all age groups."
Knowle pair Jo Hodge and Hannah Barwood, pictured, retained the Gloucestershire County Foursomes title at Minchinhampton although they were pushed to the limit by Cirencester's Alison Kelly and Hilary Swan.
They eventually squeezed home on the 18th hole to retain the Watson Williams Cup, the scratch foursomes' trophy.
The handicap competition provided another close struggle. Despite having to concede 11 shots, Henbury's Ann Manley and Lesley Gillon managed to defeat Christine Moulder and Jude Vidler (Broadway) on the 19th.
