Victimisation of elderly people

THE pensioner bashing season is upon us yet again, with the latest batty proposal by a Liberal Democrat stating that benefits available to the elderly should be scrutinised. This is just another chapter in the victimisation of the elderly.

Heaven forbid that people who have fought for their country should be allowed free bus travel and help with fuel costs. If it wasn't for that generation these self-serving politicians wouldn't be able to spout the nonsense that they do with monotonous regularity. No doubt a cumbersome means test will be introduced that will penalise the thrifty. How many times have we been told that millions of pounds worth of benefits are unclaimed each year due to the complexities of the welfare system. So why on earth shouldn't senior citizens enjoy free bus travel? Many have never claimed benefits in their lives before and the bus pass is a passport to freedom that they wouldn't otherwise have. What sort of politician would deprive these people of their entitlement, just to make sure that money is available to pay out to those who have never, ever contributed a penny to the national budget?

Should a means test be introduced it is obvious who will suffer. It is not sufficient that those who have always tried to be careful are receiving little reward on their savings due to low interest rates. Never mind that they have paid sky-high interest rates on their mortgages in the past. The thrifty are an easy target every time. More than 50 years we were told: 'We've never had it so good.' Not a chance in 2012 if you are over a certain age.

“Don't make the mistake of assuming that being in receipt of state benefits supports an extravagent and priviledged lifestyle. It doesn't. It is a bread line existance.

Even those retired people who have a small independent income or savings are way better off than those on benefits or the basic state pension.

You make your own provisions for later life and live with the consequences. Why should 'pensioners' be a case for special benefits? Come to that, why should being an ex-member of the armed forces give you access to special benefits?

It's a harsh reality but remember that those of us paying taxes in employment would be funding your free bus pass, not the government.”
