A South African Oscars award campaign starring murder suspect Oscar Pistorius has been scrapped.

The campaign, which features the athlete in a television advert and was due to see him share his views on the award nominees, has been pulled “out of respect and sympathy for the bereaved”.

The company behind the campaign, M-Net Movies, yesterday tweeted:

Meanwhile an advert for Nike which featured Pistorius with the line “I am the bullet in the chamber” has been removed from the athlete’s personal website. Nike has not commented on the sponsorship deal, however.

Pistorius has sponsorship deals with BT, Nike and Oakley. A spokeswoman for BT yesterday told Marketing Week Pistorius “is still a BT ambassador”.

Pistorius is in court this morning charged with the murder of his girlfriend, South African model Reeva Steenkamp.

The body of the 29-year-old model was discovered at the athlete's property in the Silver Woods gated community in eastern Pretoria on Thursday morning.

She had been shot four times in the head, chest and arm. A 9mm pistol was found at the scene.
