This year's Pride festival parade has got underway in Bristol - despite a date clash with the EDL march and today's wet weather.

The parade left Berkeley Square to make its way to College Green, where the party will continue.

Earlier this week organisers insisted their main event would be safe for families to attend – despite the EDL march taking place the same day.

The main part of the festival - which celebrates the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community in the city – is a parade and day-long event in College Green.

Organiser Daryn Carter talking to ThisisBristol:

Mark Kelly from Unison was at the parade this morning.

"It is really important to celebrate Pride and carry on battling nationally and internationally for our rights," he said. "It is especially important this year, with the EDL march."

Another participant in the parade was Cassie McCoolun.

She said: "It looks like it will be a great day.

"I'm not worried about the EDL march - I have complete faith in the police."

The main “We Are: Proud” event will be at College Green today - a free day-long festival will be held featuring two stages of live music and five performance areas.

More than 40 acts have already signed up including Tanya Hyde, Bristol’s biggest LGBT choir Singout Bristol and eight-piece female funk band Meet Your Feet.

In the evening, the Pride Street Fiesta will include outside DJs before a takeover of the 02 Academy.

    “@ant86

Also, don't you think you should also concentrate on the UK's religion as well if you're targetting Sharia law...

"If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them"

Levictus I believe.... So yeah, make sure you only target the one religion, don't want to seem like you're ill informed or just plain stupid now.”

Pray tell, where exactly are these Sharia law courts you seem to be so worried about in the UK?”
