Mount Hope maternity hospital at Ashley Hill, where my three children were born in the 1950s, was run by the Salvation Army.

The ground floor, I believe, housed unmarried mothers, with the first floor having two, six-bed wards.

There was a horse meat shop over the road, which was very useful as we only had the tiniest meat ration, most of which was corned beef.

On the subject of Green Shield Stamps, my father collected them and, on the day he died, told my sister that they could be found in the piano. My husband thinks that dad had said it to make us laugh. In the early 1930s, Soar's the grocers gave out yellow and red stamps.
